IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the recent days, it has been suggested that job holders, doctors and engineers to be precise, should be obligated to work in the same country where they got trained. While proponents argue the mentioned opinion while critics, including me, contend that, everyone should have their own freedom to work in any country according to their convenience. In this essay, both of these opinions are going to be discussed followed by related examples.

On the one hand, a significant number of students are pursuing MBBS and Bsc degrees or related training in different countries across the world eventhough a single country definetely has a limited number of such opportunities. For example, in recent studies, there were almost 70% of foreigner students in the USA national funded training centres whereas almost 80% of USA residents couldn't be admitted there after applying. If such a huge number of fund is invested on the foreigners who eventually are going to leave the country, it is going to be detrimental to the USA economy and they can suffer by eligible doctors in future.

On the other hand, a human should have freedom of choice that are going to affect their life and goals. There are a large number of people who aim to serve their country but there are a limited number of advanced training or research opportunities in those countries. To examplify the fact, during the corona epidemic, only Russia and USA had the advanced technologies and knowledges to prevent the virus. Therefore, many other countries' researchers went to their research and training centres and learnt about the preventions. Had those researchers were forced to serve in USA and Russia, the situation would have exacerbated. Therefore, such rules should not be exposed and the individuals should have their own choice to work in any country according to their wish.

To conclude, both the views have some merits which can not be neglected. Nevertheless, considering the liberty of choice, I firmly believe that any professionals, eventhough they are doctors or engineers, should be able to continue their occupation around anywhere in the world as long as they are willingly doing it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and make your position clear: you support professionals’ freedom to work where they choose. The two main arguments are relevant, and the examples about foreign trainees in the USA and international research during the pandemic help illustrate them. This meets the task well, but the views are not developed equally clearly. The case for requiring graduates to serve where they trained focuses mainly on public investment and possible staff shortages; explain more directly why this obligation would be fair or beneficial. The pandemic example also needs a clearer link to professionals’ freedom to move, since it describes researchers learning abroad rather than where they ultimately work. More precise explanation and support would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. The main ideas are generally sequenced logically, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Therefore” introduces the conclusion about researchers’ freedom without fully explaining how training abroad proves they should be free to work abroad. The opening sentence of the introduction is also difficult to follow because the contrast between proponents and critics is compressed into one sentence. Clarify links between claims and examples, and use referencing and transitions more naturally, to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “obligated,” “advanced training,” “research opportunities,” “detrimental,” and “liberty of choice.” These choices help communicate the central arguments, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “job holders,” “a huge number of fund,” “suffer by eligible doctors,” and “prevent the virus.” There are also spelling errors, including “definetely,” “eventhough,” and “examplify.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the essay, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim for more natural academic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional sentence and the inversion “Had those researchers were forced…”. This shows an effort to vary sentence forms, but some constructions are not controlled accurately. For example, “doctors and engineers to be precise, should be obligated” lacks a clear grammatical link, while “a human should have freedom of choice that are going to affect their life” has agreement and clause-structure problems. The conditional inversion is also faulty; use “Had those researchers been forced…” or “If those researchers had been forced…”. Other errors include “there were almost 70% of foreigner students” and “any professionals … should be able.” More accurate clause construction and agreement would improve clarity.
