IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that professionals need to serve their country from where they get the knowledge and trained themselves, while others believe that its their right to work where they want. In my opinion, any professional should have the right to work anywhere they want because we have many different ways of serving our country instead of working there.
On the one hand, professionals like doctors and engineers, need to work in the country where they get their trainings and serve the country. For instance, if a person from US, come to Pakistan to complete their MBBS, because of the time span of the degree, also the health issues occur in Pakistan are more than US, so it will help the person to gain more experience in fewer years rather than spending more years. As a result, the person trained in Pakistan earlier than other country, so its their responsibility to serve in Pakistan rather to go back and move to other country.
On the other hand, professionals spent alot of time and money in completing their studies and getting an experience of their relevant fields. They should be free to work anywhere they want to gain more relevant experience according to their field. For example, there is no scope of petroleum in Pakistan but in Saudi Arabia, petroleum engineer will have a chance to get a boost in his relevant field, so its better for him to move their without any restriction. As a result, he earned in another currency and a transfer of the money will b beneficial for his country.
In conclusion, although professions need to stay and serve the country from where they complete their training, whereas I believe that person would not have any restriction to follow and stay to the same place regardless of the scope in that country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and state a clear preference for professionals to choose where they work. The argument for staying is supported by the example of a Pakistani medical graduate, while the petroleum-engineering example explains why work abroad may offer better career prospects and allow money to be sent home. These points are relevant, but some reasoning is unclear or not fully developed: the comparison about gaining experience “in fewer years” does not clearly establish why the graduate should remain in Pakistan, and the conclusion largely repeats your position rather than drawing the discussion together. To strengthen the response, explain the public benefit of requiring locally trained professionals to serve locally, then weigh that against individual freedom and the benefits of international work before reaching your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces a conclusion that does not clearly follow from the preceding point about training duration, and the final sentence uses “although” and “whereas” in a way that makes the relationship between the two clauses confusing. Some references, such as “their” in the petroleum example, are also not immediately clear. Use more precise links that show whether an idea is a reason, contrast, or consequence, and make each paragraph’s progression explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “professionals,” “relevant fields,” “petroleum engineer,” and “restriction.” There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as “gain more relevant experience” and “a transfer of the money.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, which limits precision: “get the knowledge,” “complete their trainings,” and “get a boost” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling and form issues such as “alot” and “b” also reduce control. Aim to learn common academic collocations for education, employment, and migration, and check whether each phrase expresses the intended meaning naturally. More precise vocabulary would make your examples and reasoning clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “although,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some errors remain in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “if a person from US, come to Pakistan” has an incorrect verb form and punctuation, while “a person … their trainings” shifts between singular and plural forms. The final sentence, “although … whereas I believe,” combines contrasting structures in a way that makes the grammar difficult to follow. There are also missing or incorrect articles in phrases such as “from US.” Review subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around one clear main clause; this will help you retain variety while improving accuracy.
