IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The statement that the professionals are obliged to work in the country where they got trained is controversial. Although, I understand the agrument of this statement, I believe the professionals should be free to work in any country they wish.

Supporters of compulsory home-country service argue on economic grounds. Training doctor or an engineer in admittedly expensive, and time taking in many countries. If the graduate emigrates immediately the country loses its investment and suffers from a "brain drain". For instance, professionals from many under-developed countries, like Pakistan and Nigeria, moves to Europe or States immediately after graduating, right when its time to serve the nation, and hence the rural hospitals remains understaffed. Requiring these graduates to stay would therefore protect essentional public services.

However, others contend that restricting movement is unfair and often counterproductive. Professionals may get better salary packages, better training opportunities, or a more safer and comfortable working conditions, that were not available at home, and restricting an individual from this means infringing their personal freedom. Moreover, graduates working in a more developed country can frequently benefit their home country in other ways, such as sending remittance to the family or returning with more advanced skilss and experience. A person forced to work at a place against their wish can directly affect their performance, which could harm the quality

of the very service policy aims to protect.

In my opinion, countries should not legally prevent professionals from working abroad. A better approach would be for government to work on better salaries and safer working conditons at home. This would protect public investment without removing individual choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state your position clearly: you recognise the case for protecting public investment, then argue that professionals should be free to work abroad. The examples of Pakistan and Nigeria and the contrast between compulsory service and improved domestic conditions make the response relevant. The conclusion also follows logically from your opinion. To strengthen the discussion further, develop the supporting examples and explain their implications more precisely. For instance, the claim that graduates leaving cause rural hospitals to remain understaffed is relevant, but a brief explanation of how this affects access to healthcare would extend it. The benefits of working abroad are also listed rather than explored in depth. Your response covers the task well, though some ideas need fuller development and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position and proposes an alternative. The progression from the economic argument to personal freedom is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “For instance,” “Moreover,” and “In my opinion” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less smooth within paragraphs, however. The sentence beginning “For instance” contains several claims in one sequence, making the example harder to process, while “A person forced to work…” shifts to a consequence without clearly linking it to the preceding benefits. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more explicit links between each reason and its effect. Overall, organisation is coherent, though cohesion is not consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “brain drain,” “public services,” “personal freedom,” “remittance,” and “public investment.” These choices help communicate the central arguments, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccuracies. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “agrument,” “essentional,” “skilss,” and “conditons” should be corrected, while “a more safer” is an awkward expression. Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “got trained” and “serve the nation.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, particularly when discussing professional training and working conditions. Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes some less common items, but accuracy and natural phrasing need more consistent control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in “Although, I understand…” and conditional reasoning in “If the graduate emigrates immediately…”. These structures allow you to express contrast and cause and effect, and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Training doctor or an engineer… is” needs appropriate articles and agreement, and “professionals… moves” and “the rural hospitals remains” contain subject–verb agreement errors. The opening “Although” clause is also punctuated incorrectly when separated from the main clause. In “a more safer,” the comparative structure is faulty. Review articles, agreement, and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use complex forms. The range is present, but errors prevent consistently accurate control.
