IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Professionals such as doctors and engineers have worked hard to get their professions. To receive such high level of education, it requires money, time, effort, and sacrifice during their school days, practicum, and taking of licensure exams. Many people have failed in the process. Now, some people wants them to work in their home country, while others think that it is their right to work wherever they wish. In my opinion, both beliefs are correct.

There are people who thinks that professionals are required to work in their own country and not overseas. They feel that it is not fair because the education that these professionals have obtain through school was provided by their own academe and/or financial aid was provided for the studies. They believe that it is the professionals duty to give back to their nation. One example are those who graduated with the help of the government funding or scholarship grants.

On the other hand, there are some people who believe that professionals are free to choose wherever they want to work. These professionals have worked hard to achieve their profession. It is their right as individual to choose their place of work. Every person has a dream. These dreams have pushed them to reach their goals. For instance, a student wants to become a doctor so he can work abroad and earn more for his family. People should not stop them from doing what he wants.

I believe that they should give at least 2-3 years of service to their country. It is enough service to pay back for all the years that their country has helped them to get their profession. After that, they can choose to work overseas if they want.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: professionals should serve their country for two or three years before choosing where to work. The discussion of public funding and the right to pursue personal goals is relevant, and the scholarship example helps illustrate the first view. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The argument for requiring service relies mainly on repayment for education, without considering whether this obligation should apply to professionals whose training was privately funded. The opposing view is also illustrated by one hypothetical student rather than a broader explanation of why working abroad may benefit individuals or their families. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and more specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a final paragraph giving your position. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “For instance” help readers follow the argument, and the central position is easy to identify. To make the organisation more effective, connect the final proposal more explicitly to the two arguments already discussed—for example, explain why a limited service period balances national investment with individual choice. Some references are also unclear: in “People should not stop them from doing what he wants,” the pronouns shift from plural to singular. More precise referencing and smoother links between supporting examples and claims would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial aid,” “government funding,” “scholarship grants,” “licensure exams,” and “work overseas.” These expressions make the subject clear, and the wording is generally understandable. However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “get their professions,” “their own academe,” and “achieve their profession.” Repetition of “professionals,” “work,” and “country” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms when discussing training, public investment, and employment. For instance, distinguish between completing professional training and entering a profession, and use varied expressions for working abroad. This would make the argument sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional idea “if they want” and the reason clause “because the education … was provided.” Meaning is generally clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain. Examples include “some people wants” and “There are people who thinks,” where the verbs should agree with plural subjects, and “the professionals duty,” which needs a possessive form. In “One example are those,” the subject and verb do not agree. The sentence beginning “To receive such high level of education, it requires…” also has an unclear construction. Review subject–verb agreement and practise building accurate complex sentences with clear subjects.
