Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph compares about the job in the four sectors of US in the time period of 1960 to 2020.

In 1960 sharp rise of emolyment started in manfuacturing and retail industry following it 1980 in the agriculture there were 20 million job that later in 2000 there were almost equal job in the both sectors. Whereas retail sector overtok the manufactoring industry in the mid of 2000.

Likewise, agriculture and healthcare job opportunity increases in the begining of 1960, and agriculture took a steady decline and remained the same amount of jobs. While the heathcare jobs surge and took over the all the three reamaining industry and provided 15 million jobs.

I conclude that healthcare industry took over the US job oppurtunity over the years were as the other took rise and fall in the following year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the four sectors and mention several broad trends, including manufacturing’s rise and later decline, agriculture’s fall, and healthcare’s growth. However, key details are confused: the 20 million jobs in 1980 belonged to manufacturing, not agriculture, and healthcare did not overtake all three other sectors; by 2020 it was level with retail at about 16 million. The overview is also unclear, and the response does not consistently select and report accurate comparisons across the period. The conclusion repeats a general claim rather than summarising the main pattern precisely. The response is 138 words, below the required 150, so it also needs fuller development. Focus on an accurate overview and support it with the main figures and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response begins with an introduction, moves through trends, and ends with a concluding sentence. Linking expressions such as “Whereas,” “Likewise,” and “While” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several trends are combined in long, unclear sentences, and the relationships between sectors are not consistently signposted. For example, the sentence beginning “In 1960 sharp rise…” shifts between years and sectors without a clear sequence. The conclusion also repeats the idea of sectors rising and falling rather than drawing the main comparisons together. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and detailed comparisons, and organise the details chronologically or by contrasting trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “sharp rise,” “steady decline,” “surge,” and “overtok,” showing some awareness of trend language. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the meaning difficult to understand, such as “job opportunity” for employment figures and “took over the US job opportunity.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “emolyment,” “manfuacturing,” “heathcare,” and “oppurtunity.” These reduce clarity and make the report less precise. Use standard terms such as “number of jobs,” “employment,” and “sector,” and check spelling carefully. Aim to use trend vocabulary accurately rather than repeating broad phrases about rises and falls.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, using clauses introduced by “Whereas,” “Likewise,” and “While.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors frequently make the relationships between ideas hard to interpret. For example, “In 1960 sharp rise … following it 1980” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “agriculture and healthcare job opportunity increases” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. Tense and article use are also inconsistent, as in “in the begining of 1960.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation need attention, particularly where several ideas are joined together. Build accuracy with clear subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence for a complete structure.
