Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify all four sectors and describe the broad contrast between rising employment in retail and healthcare and falling employment in agriculture. You also note manufacturing’s rise to 1980 followed by decline, which is relevant. However, the overview is not consistently accurate: manufacturing and agriculture did not both have more jobs than the other sectors in 1960, and retail and healthcare were not both higher than the other sectors in 1980. The response also gives few clear comparisons or supporting figures, and the final point is unfinished, so several key trends remain underdeveloped. To improve, state the main ranking changes accurately and support them with selected values, such as manufacturing peaking at about 20 million in 1980 and healthcare reaching about 16 million by 2020.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, gives an overview, and then attempts to describe individual sector trends. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “However” show an effort to connect ideas. Nevertheless, progression is difficult to follow because the overview repeats points later and some comparisons are unclear or contradictory. For example, the claim that retail and healthcare are higher than the other sectors in 1980 does not fit the chart, while the manufacturing discussion repeats its decline without clearly separating the stages. The final sentence also stops abruptly. Group the rising sectors together and the declining sectors together, use each paragraph for a distinct purpose, and ensure each comparison follows logically from the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “sectors,” “jobs,” “increase,” and “decrease,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “jobs opportunity,” “the ratio becomes decrease,” and “jobs are less” are not natural ways to describe employment figures. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “discribes,” “deparments,” and “oppurtunity.” Use precise terms such as “employment,” “number of jobs,” “rose,” and “declined,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid repeating “jobs” and “departments” when more specific wording is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “but” and a sentence beginning “However.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Healthcare and retail departments having less jobs” lacks a finite verb, while “jobs are increase” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence “Manufacturing and Agriculture departments having more jobs in 1960” has the same structural problem, and “the ratio becomes decrease” is not grammatically formed. These errors can make relationships between trends hard to follow. Practise complete subject–verb sentences, for example, “Healthcare employment increased over the period,” and use past-tense verbs consistently when reporting the historical data.
