Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons between the four sectors. You successfully highlight the consistent growth in healthcare and retail, the decline in agriculture, and the fluctuating pattern of manufacturing. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, the claim that manufacturing fell to the third position by 2020 is a good analytical observation. The response covers all requirements of the task well, providing a clear summary of the key features throughout the 60-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group the sectors effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', 'Meanwhile', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sectors. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the overall cohesion. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'consistent upward trend', 'bottomed out', and 'peaked'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Regrading' (likely a typo for 'Regarding') and 'reached to' (the verb 'reach' does not require the preposition 'to'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the data trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is a good attempt at complexity, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with sentence fragments (e.g., 'Regrading manufacturing sector, which started at 15 million...') and unnecessary relative clauses that lead to incomplete sentences. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'healthcare sector' (should be 'the healthcare sector'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on sentence construction and ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb will improve your accuracy.
