Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or accurately report the main features of the graph. The description of the trends is often contradictory or factually incorrect based on the data (e.g., stating manufacturing jobs increased in 1960 and then decreased, while the graph shows a different trajectory). The response lacks a clear summary of the key trends, such as the significant growth in healthcare or the decline in agriculture. The information is presented in a repetitive and disorganized manner, failing to highlight the most significant comparisons between the four sectors. To improve, focus on identifying the overall trends and selecting key data points to support those observations rather than describing each sector in isolation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks logical progression and clear paragraphing. The introduction and overview are repetitive, with the second paragraph essentially restating the prompt. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas, and the transition between sentences is often abrupt or confusing. For instance, the shift between sectors is handled mechanically without clear signposting. The referencing is also weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the development of the argument. To improve, use clear topic sentences for each paragraph and employ a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') to create a smoother flow between the data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'increase', 'decrease', and 'jobs'. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'oportunities', 'increse', 'ti') and awkward collocations (e.g., 'several passage of time'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate precision or flexibility, which is required for higher bands. To improve, incorporate more varied and precise terminology related to trends and data analysis, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline steadily', 'upward trend', or 'significant growth'. Additionally, ensure that you proofread your work to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The line graph provide', 'This sectors gives'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures. The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, and the punctuation is inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and sentence construction. Practice using complex sentences by combining ideas with relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past data.
