Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the changes in employment numbers across four economic sectors in the United States between 1960 and 2020.

Overall, it is apparent that manufacturing was the dominant sector in 1960 but experienced an overall decline. Conversely, both healthcare and retail witnessed substantial increases, with healthcare showing the most dramatic growth. Agriculture, meanwhile, remained the smallest sector throughout the period.

In 1960, manufacturing employed approximately 15 million people, which was the highest figure among the four sectors. It increased to a peak of around 20 million in 1980 before declining steadily to about 13 million in 2020. By comparison, both retail and healthcare started at much lower levels, with 6 million and 2 million jobs respectively. However, they experienced consistent growth throughout the period. Retail rose to roughly 16 million by 2020, while healthcare saw the most dramatic increase, climbing to approximately 15 million. As a result, both sectors overtook manufacturing by 2020.

In contrast, agriculture was the only other sector to see a decline. It fell gradually from 5 million jobs in 1960 to just 2 million in 2020, making it the smallest sector by the end of the period.
