Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of jobs in four sectors of the US economy between 1960 and 2020, with figures given in millions.

Overall, employment in retail and healthcare increased throughout the period, whereas agriculture experienced an overall decline. Manufacturing was the only sector to rise initially before falling after reaching a peak in 1980. By 2020, retail and healthcare had the highest employment figures, while agriculture had the lowest.

Looking first at the sectors that showed a downward or mixed trend, manufacturing started at 15 million jobs in 1960 and then rose to a peak of 20 million in 1980. However, its figure subsequently declined, falling to 17 million in 2000 and 13 million by 2020. Agriculture, by contrast, followed a generally downward trend. It stood at 6 million jobs in 1960, before dropping to 3 million in 1980. This figure then remained unchanged in 2000 and fell slightly further to 2 million in 2020. Thus, manufacturing remained considerably higher than agriculture throughout the period.

Turning to the two sectors that experienced sustained growth, retail increased steadily from 6 million jobs in 1960 to 10 million in 1980, before reaching 15 million in 2000 and 16 million in 2020. Healthcare recorded an even more substantial increase. Starting at just 2 million jobs in 1960, the figure rose to 5 million in 1980 and 11 million in 2000, before reaching 16 million in 2020. Notably, healthcare and retail ended the period at the same level of 16 million jobs, despite healthcare having started at only one-third of the retail figure.
