Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The bar chart depicts the percentage of total world population for 4 countries over a period of 52 years from 1950 to 2002, with projections for the next 48 years as well.

Overall, the trend shows a steady decline in population for the developed countries, whereas, it shows a gradual increase in the population for the developing countries, furthermore, it predicts the future trends where the latter will surpass the developed nations.

In 1950s, china accounted for about 23% of the total world population which was highest at that time, with india becoming the succesor, and contributing at 15%. While the percentage increased steadily for india over the next 52 years, for china it declined significantly crashing down at just 20%.

Furthermore, USA and Japan also contributed a good chunk of percentage to the total world population in the 1950s, but declined steadily and were just about 5% in the 2002 data. The 2050 prediction for the developing countries enlightens us over the fact that their population would significantly grow and contribute more than the developed countries at that time, while on the other hand, the developed countries population would largely be cut down and expected to fall under the 5% mark. China will be largely affected and would contribute just 15% of the total world population in 2050.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a report on the number of jobs in four sectors of the US economy between 1960 and 2020. However, your essay describes population percentages for different countries (China, India, USA, Japan) from 1950 to 2050. Because you have failed to address the specific data provided in the prompt, the task achievement is severely compromised. You must ensure you are reading the correct graph and task instructions before beginning your writing. In an actual exam, this would result in a very low score as the content does not relate to the task requirements at all.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

While the essay is structured into paragraphs and uses some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'In 1950s', the logical progression is irrelevant to the task. The paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, but because the content does not match the prompt, the coherence is undermined by the fact that the ideas do not relate to the provided visual information. To improve, ensure that your paragraph structure directly supports the analysis of the specific data provided in the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

You demonstrate a reasonable range of vocabulary, such as 'projections', 'surpass', 'contributed', and 'significantly'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'succesor' (spelled incorrectly) and 'enlightens us over the fact', which is not a natural collocation in this context. While you have enough vocabulary to convey your ideas, the lack of relevance to the task means you are not using the specific terminology required for describing economic sectors or employment trends. Focus on using precise vocabulary relevant to the specific data set provided.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'In 1950s' (should be 'In the 1950s'), 'contributing at 15%' (should be 'contributing 15%'), and 'the developed countries population' (missing possessive apostrophe). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as using commas to join independent clauses where a period or semicolon would be more appropriate. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors and the lack of control over complex structures limit your score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage.
