Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all four sectors (Manufacturing, Retail, Agriculture, and Healthcare) and spans the period from 1960 to 2020. An overview or concluding summary is missing, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. However, the student manages to report the main features and trends for each sector, such as noting that healthcare jobs increased steadily from 2.5 million to 15.5 million. There are minor data inaccuracies, such as stating retail reached 15.5 million in 2020 when the graph shows a slightly different figure, but overall the prompt's data is engaged with adequately. To reach a higher band, the writer should include a clear overview paragraph highlighting the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response attempts to organise information by sector, with each paragraph dealing with different industries over the given timeline. However, the overall organisation is mechanical and lacks cohesive devices and smooth transitions between sentences. Phrases like 'in 1960...', 'and in 1980...', and 'and in 2000...' are repeated excessively within sentences, creating a run-on structure that hampers progression. Furthermore, paragraphing is poorly executed, as multiple distinct ideas and sectors are crammed into single blocks without clear logical signposting. Cohesive devices are very basic, relying almost entirely on 'and', which restricts the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, heavily relying on basic verbs of change such as 'increase', 'decrease', 'rise', and 'drop'. There are also several lexical and spelling errors, such as 'significantlly', 'partically', and 'everyyear'. While the student manages to name the economic sectors and numerical values adequately, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate flexibility or precision. Less common lexical items are entirely absent, and word choices are often overly simplistic. To improve, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing trends and focus on accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text relies heavily on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions like 'and', resulting in run-on structures. There is a lack of varied complex sentence forms. Numerous grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the healthcare job was', 'the jobs was') and missing articles or prepositions (e.g., 'in US'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas and periods causing sentences to run together awkwardly. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse the intended meaning, placing the response firmly in the Band 5 category for grammar.
