Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the four economic sectors and tracking their employment trends between 1960 and 2020. An overview is attempted, noting the shifts in popularity such as retail initially leading and healthcare growing significantly. However, the student confuses the categories in places, such as mentioning 'manufacturing' in the introduction but omitting it later, and confusing manufacturing, retail, and agriculture trends in the body paragraphs. Key data points are mentioned, such as 15 million for retail and 3 million for agriculture, but some figures are imprecise or misallocated. This results in an uneven coverage of the data, aligning best with a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing transitions and unclear referencing. For instance, the overview contains a confusing fragment ('heath are surpass retail sector') and body paragraphs feature run-on ideas without clear connections. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, as seen in phrases like 'To begin with retail sector which was...' and 'Moving further, retail and agriculture jobs...'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion and referencing are faulty, warranting a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary adequate for basic reporting, such as 'jobs', 'sector', 'increase', and 'decreased'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'secor' for sector, 'heath are' for healthcare, 'decadeds' for decades, 'stoped' for stopped, 'beggning' for beginning, and 'accupatuon' for occupation. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical control, capping the performance at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent structural errors and missing verbs or prepositions, such as 'retail secor was at highest in initial years', 'healthcare had least employees', and 'agriculture accupatuon become less popular'. Clauses are frequently strung together without proper punctuation or conjunctions (e.g., 'Furthermore, in 1960 healthcare was least job sector near 3 million significant growth'). These errors frequently impede communication and place the grammar at a Band 5.0 level.
