Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph while making clear comparisons. An overview is present in the second paragraph, highlighting the overall upward trends for healthcare and retail, and downward trends for manufacturing and agriculture. Key figures are accurately cited, such as manufacturing peaking at 20 million in 1980 and healthcare reaching nearly 18 million (visual shows 16 million, but within acceptable approximation range) by 2020. Minor inaccuracies in reading specific start and end points exist, such as stating agriculture started at about 4 million (visual shows 6 million), but these do not detract from the overall successful coverage of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs grouping the sectors logically (healthcare and retail together, manufacturing and agriculture together). Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'It is clear', 'The retail sector showed steady growth', 'Moving further', and 'Lastly'. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure, preventing it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the message is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, employing terms such as 'downward trend', 'grow rapidly', 'climb consistently', and 'drop sharply'. There are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'amonut', 'signnificant', 'jobes', 'samllest', and 'steday'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but spelling inaccuracies and occasional awkward word choices (e.g., 'most popular sector' instead of 'largest sector') prevent a higher score, though these errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tense narrative structures (e.g., 'It began at around 6 million jobs in 1960 and climbed consistently'). There are frequent error-free sentences, but grammatical and mechanical errors are present, including punctuation spacing issues (e.g., 'overview, the', 'in1960', 'sector in1960', 'with15', 'in2020', 'around 2to3') and missing spaces. Complex structures are attempted with generally good control, but punctuation slips and minor mechanical errors keep this at a solid band 6.5.
