Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by describing the main features of the four economic sectors between 1960 and 2020. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that manufacturing started decreasing in the 'last 2 years' from 16 million to 13 million, whereas the graph shows it peaked in 1980 at 20 million before declining to 17 million in 2000 and 13 million in 2020. Similarly, the agriculture sector is said to have gone from 5 million to 2 million, while the visual data shows it started at 6 million in 1960. While an overview is attempted in the conclusion, the overall response lacks precise data selection and clear summarisation of trends, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, a body paragraph, and a conclusion, showing some basic organisation. However, paragraphing and mechanical layout are poorly handled, with spacing issues and a lack of clear separation between ideas. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes awkward, such as 'On the other hand', 'Interestingly', and 'At last'. Progression is difficult to follow because sentences are clustered together without logical transitional flow, and the referencing of data points is frequently confused. For these reasons, the coherence and cohesion reflect a Band 5.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying on terms like 'increasing', 'decreasing', and 'rising' throughout the text. There are several vocabulary errors and misspellings, such as 'decereasing', 'deacreasing', 'stoped' (stopped), and 'camparison'. The student attempts less common expressions like 'year by year', but overall control of word choice and collocation is limited. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of jobs in economic sectors, spelling and word-formation errors pull the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mainly of simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. There are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., '1960 to 1980,the', 'conclusion, The'). Furthermore, awkward phrasings like 'The not even a single sector was on its peak' demonstrate a lack of control over complex forms. Errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for a Band 5.0.
