Student answer (Band 8.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of jobs in four sectors of the US economy, namely manufacturing, retail, agriculture and healthcare, between 1960 and 2020.

Overall, manufacturing had the highest number of jobs at the beginning of the period, but its figure declined after reaching a peak in 1980. In contrast, employment in retail and healthcare increased considerably over the period. Agriculture experienced a gradual decline and had the fewest jobs by 2020.

In 1960, manufacturing accounted for approximately 15 million jobs, which was considerably higher than the figures for retail and agriculture, at around 6 million each. Healthcare had the lowest figure, with only about 2 million jobs. By 1980, manufacturing had risen to a peak of 20 million, while retail increased to 10 million. Meanwhile, healthcare climbed to approximately 5 million, whereas agriculture fell to around 3 million.

From 1980 onwards, the number of manufacturing jobs declined, reaching about 17 million in 2000 and 13 million in 2020. Retail, on the other hand, continued to grow, reaching 15 million in 2000 and approximately 16 million in 2020. Healthcare also experienced significant growth, rising from 5 million in 1980 to 11 million in 2000 and 16 million in 2020. Agriculture remained relatively stable at around 3 million in 2000 before falling to approximately 1.5 million in 2020.
