Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by describing the four sectors of the economy between 1960 and 2020. However, the task achievement is severely limited due to significant data misinterpretations, expression errors, and a lack of a clear, structured overview. For example, the student states that 'agriculture are nineteen to twenty century' and incorrectly reads data points such as manufacturing falling to 'below 10.5 jobs in million', whereas the graph shows it at 13 million in 2020. Furthermore, the overall trends are obscured by confusing phrasing, repetitive sentence structures, and lack of clear comparative analysis between the categories. While some data points are mentioned, the lack of accurate reporting and coherent summarization prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the text is very weak, lacking a logical progression of ideas. Although the student attempts to divide the response into introductory and explanatory paragraphs, the paragraphing is ineffective because the sentences within them do not flow logically or build upon each other. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused (e.g., 'In the summary...', 'In the explanation...'), making it difficult for the reader to follow the connections between data points. Repetitive referencing and disjointed clause structures further disrupt the flow, resulting in an overall lack of cohesion throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The lexical range is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on vocabulary lifted directly from the prompt, such as 'number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US'. There are frequent word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'the the lowest line in graph are agriculture' and 'health care are the maximum 5 up to15 jobs in million'. The student also struggles with basic spelling and lexical forms (e.g., 'enconomy', 'ninteen'). These lexical limitations and errors frequently impede communication and restrict the vocabulary to a very restricted repertoire.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting almost entirely of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex constructions. There are persistent, fundamental errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the number of jobs... are', 'manufacturing are highest'), tense usage, and prepositions. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization. These grammatical errors occur in almost every sentence and frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader.
