Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all four sectors of the economy and identifies key trends over the given period, satisfying the main requirements of Task 1. An overview is provided at the end, which highlights the general contrast between declining and growing sectors. However, some of the specific data references are vague or imprecise, such as describing the change in the medical sector as an 'unreliable increase' (likely a misuse of vocabulary intended to mean 'unbelievable' or 'incredible') and describing the manufacturing sector as high 'comparitively other sectors' without specifying peak years or exact figures accurately. While the main features are captured, the development of trends lacks precision in places, placing this response firmly in Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and an overall summary, providing a coherent overall arrangement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related sectors. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitions like 'Looking first at the year of 1960-1980' and 'On the other hand, if we talk about' are quite conversational rather than academic. Referencing and progression are generally clear, but the logical flow between sentences occasionally stumbles due to awkward phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic trends such as 'growth', 'decrease', and 'sector'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices, such as 'different field of workforce' instead of 'sectors of the economy', 'unbelievable increase' instead of a dramatic or sharp rise, and 'jobloss' written as one word. There are also spelling and collocation errors like 'comparitively' and 'stablised'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the score to Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'while the other two were continued to achieve higher figures' (which contains a passive voice error). Grammatical accuracy is inconsistent; there are several errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'jobs in manufacturing sector was high' instead of 'were high', and awkward phrasing like 'graph records the significant fall'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor grammatical slips keep the writing at a Band 5.5 level.
