Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying sectors such as manufacturing, retail, agriculture, and healthcare, and noting general trends over the sixty-year period. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data points. For instance, the student states that agriculture began with 5 million jobs, whereas the graph indicates it started at around 6 million in 1960. Additionally, the overview is rather weak, merely stating that there are four sectors and the highest/lowest points without outlining the broader global trends clearly. While the report meets the minimum word count and attempts task completion, these data discrepancies and underdeveloped overview place it at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, providing some overall logical arrangement. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing, repetitive transitional phrases like 'day by day' and 'at the end of the year', and mechanical use of cohesive devices (e.g., 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth transitions. Because the organization is somewhat mechanical and lacks clear overall progression in places, it aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms ('jobs', 'sectors', 'economy', 'number') and awkward lexical choices or phrasing (e.g., 'reached at peaks', 'starting only 2 million', 'ratio were increased', 'mill double is'). There are frequent word choice errors and unnatural collocations that reflect a restricted lexical range. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic subject matter, the noticeable errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent basic errors. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are consistently faulty (e.g., 'The graph below illustrate', 'the there are four different sectors', 'number of jobs decreased randomly approximately 13 million jobs in at the end of period'). Subject-verb agreement errors, missing prepositions, and incorrect verb tense forms (such as mixing present and past time frames) occur throughout the text. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 4.5 to 5.0 grammatical capability; a score of 5.0 is awarded.
