Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student attempts to cover all four sectors across the 1960-2020 timeframe, successfully highlighting the growth in retail and healthcare, the fluctuating manufacturing sector, and the decline in agriculture. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in specific data reporting when compared to the visual data. For instance, the text mentions that agriculture dropped from 6 million to 4 million, whereas the graph indicates a drop from 6 million down to 2 or 3 million by 2020. Additionally, the overview lacks a distinct, separate opening summary statement, resulting in a score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is written as a single, dense block of text without paragraph breaks, which severely limits its coherence and visual organisation. While there are cohesive devices used to link ideas, such as 'whereas', 'meanwhile', and 'although', the absence of paragraphs makes the essay difficult to read and follow logically. A clear division between an introduction/overview and body paragraphs detailing specific trends is missing. Therefore, it meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'remarkable growth', 'progressive decrease', and 'continuous depletion'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing appear, such as 'depletion of the number of jobs by around 3 million mostly happening around the first 2 decades'. The range is sufficient to convey the main trends, placing it comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and subordinating conjunctions ('Although the agriculture sector and retail sector started off...'). However, there are punctuation errors, notably the run-on nature of long sentences, and a minor typo ('a a remarkable growth'). Errors do not impede overall communication, but grammatical control is inconsistent, which aligns with the Band 6 descriptor.
