Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph comparing four economic sectors in the US from 1960 to 2020. However, the information provided is extremely vague, highly generalised, and contains imprecise reporting of the data. For instance, stating that the manufacturing sector 'create a high number of jobs' lacks specific figures or accurate descriptions of its peak in 1980 and subsequent decline. Furthermore, the overview is weak, and the comparisons between sectors such as healthcare and retail lack clarity. While the writer identifies the overall trends and the relative positions of the sectors, the underdeveloped nature of the data reporting limits the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows an attempt to organise ideas into paragraphs, but the paragraphing is poor, clustering disparate thoughts into dense, poorly structured blocks of text. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent phrase 'the following periods' and 'in the following duration'. There is a lack of clear logical progression and referencing is occasionally confusing, for example, referring to 'All the fourth sectors' instead of four. While the overall text holds together mechanically, the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices and flawed paragraph structure place this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary is limited and repetitive throughout the response. The student relies heavily on basic terminology and makes numerous word-form and spelling errors, such as 'satastics' instead of statistics, 'durind' for during, and 'difinetely show's'. Phrases like 'job created sectors' and 'least sector of the USA economy that's contribution to create jobs' demonstrate a lack of control over collocation and word choice. While the general topic is understandable, the frequent lexical inaccuracies and narrow range restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural failures when attempting more complex forms. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'the manufacturing sector create', 'gradually down', and 'agriculture sector who difinetely show's'. Punctuation is also faulty, with missing spaces after periods. These frequent grammatical errors cause noticeable strain for the reader, placing the writing at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
