Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover all four sectors mentioned in the graph from 1960 to 2020. An overview is present, though it is somewhat fragmented ('Agriculture and Retails are on same page in 1960...'). Key trends are identified, such as the rise in healthcare and retail, and the decline in agriculture. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting and grouping; for instance, stating 'Retail and Healthcare in year 1960 provides 6 million and 3 millions' conflicts with the actual chart data where healthcare started around 2 million and retail at 6 million. Furthermore, the phrasing lacks a clear, cohesive overall summary of the main contrasting trends. The response meets the minimum length requirement and addresses the prompt, but the data misinterpretations and lack of precise overview placement limit it to a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body details, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by choppy sentences and poorly structured transitions. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'At a glance, in US healthcare sectores jobs increase steady...' and 'To start with... On the other hand sectors like...'. Referencing and linking between sentences often feel disjointed, making the overall flow quite abrupt. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs is disorganised, mixing different sectors and years without a clear structural logic. This places the response firmly in the Band 5.0 range for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary suitable for a task 1 response, relying heavily on basic terms and repeating words such as 'jobs', 'sector', 'million', and 'year'. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors throughout, including 'sectores', 'millione', 'throuout', 'avail's', 'respectufully', 'creats', 'growes', 'drastially', and 'distinguish paterns'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are compromised by poor word choice and morphological errors (e.g., 'avail's', 'distinguish' instead of 'distinct'). While the reader can generally extract the intended meaning, the density of spelling and word-formation errors restricts the lexical score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structures used are predominantly simple sentences or attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. Examples of structural and tense inaccuracies include 'The line graph illustrate...', 'jobs increase steady', 'Agriculture jobs in 1960 is 6 millions that decline...', and 'Manufacturing is the sectore that creats the most numberof jobs in year 1960 that is 15 million it growes further 20 million...'. Subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'graph illustrate'), missing prepositions, and run-on sentences without proper punctuation heavily affect accuracy. There is a very limited range of error-free structures. Consequently, the grammar performance aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
