Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by describing the four economic sectors in the US between 1960 and 2020. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the task requirements due to severe misinterpretations of the visual data. For instance, the student states that manufacturing was just '2./.' in 1990 and 'rise in fall 16./.' in 2020, which completely contradicts the actual data on the graph where manufacturing starts at 15 million in 1960 and peaks at 20 million in 1980 before declining. The numbers and percentages provided throughout the essay (using symbols like './.' for percent or numbers) are largely erratic and incorrect, making it difficult to discern a clear overview or accurately reported main features. Consequently, the response achieves a Band 4.0 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organization and progression of the essay are severely disrupted by disjointed sentences and a lack of proper paragraphing. The response is essentially a single dense block of confused statements. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'while they other still same working', 'then they still down fall', and 'wherever other ratio is good comparing'. These transitional phrases fail to establish logical links between ideas. Furthermore, pronoun referencing is extremely confusing, with repeated use of vague terms like 'they' and 'other' without clear antecedents. Because information and ideas are not arranged cohesively or logically, the writing corresponds to the Band 4.0 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and frequently incorrect. The student attempts some subject-specific words such as 'manufacturing', 'agricultures', 'retailer', and 'healthcare', but these are often misused grammatically or contextually (e.g., using 'retailer' to mean retail jobs, and 'agricultures' for agriculture). Moreover, the frequent use of unusual symbols like '2./.' instead of clear numerical or percentage values severely strains comprehension. There is an absence of flexible or precise lexical items suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, and the sheer frequency of word-choice errors places this submission firmly at Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of poorly constructed, fragmented, or ungrammatical simple sentences. There is a complete lack of control over basic sentence structures, leading to non-sentences such as 'The graph below illustrate the information about the number of jobs in four sectors of economy in the us 1960 to 2020' (plural/singular agreement errors, missing capitalization, and missing verbs). Errors are present in almost every sentence—including tense confusion, missing articles, incorrect word forms, and flawed punctuation—which frequently distorts the meaning and makes the text very difficult to read. This performance aligns with Band 4.0.
