Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting on the four economic sectors across the given period, highlighting key trends such as the rise in retail and healthcare and the decline in agriculture and manufacturing. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting specific data points. For instance, the student states that retail employment increased from 5 million in the 60s, whereas the graph indicates it started at around 6 million. Additionally, the overview paragraph lacks clarity and contains minor repetition. To reach a higher band, the overview should clearly encapsulate the overall trends without repeating introductory information, and figures should be cited more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement with paragraphs dedicated to an introduction, general trends, and specific data details. However, progression is sometimes faulty and repetitive, particularly in how information is divided between paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as repetitive transitions like 'on the other hand' and 'in 60 years of time'. Paragraphing is present, but the logical flow between sentences could be tighter to ensure seamless progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuated', 'sharp decline', and 'boomed up'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation, such as 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'jobs shows' instead of 'jobs show', and 'rised' instead of 'rose'. Vocabulary is sometimes repetitive, with phrases like 'number of jobs' and '60 years of time' recurring without sufficient variation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Manufacturing jobs shows', 'jobs in agriculture has') and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in grammar can cause occasional difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.
