Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response covers the task only partially, reflecting features of the visual data while struggling with accurate interpretation. The introductory sentence is confused and tangled, stating that the graph illustrates the information and that it has been provided. The overview attempts to identify the highest and lowest sectors, but it contains factual inaccuracies based on the chart, claiming Manufacturing had the highest number of jobs overall when Healthcare reached the same level of 16 million in 2020. The body paragraphs describe some trends, such as the rise in healthcare and the drop in agriculture, but details are frequently imprecise or confused, such as stating that manufacturing was 'interconnected' with other sectors. To move up, the writer needs to present a clearer overview without contradictions and ensure all reported data points directly match the provided chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organization, but there is no clear overall progression and the structure is fragmented. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction and body sections, but transitional phrases like 'To begin with' are misused in the middle of the response where they do not logically introduce the paragraph's purpose. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes inaccurate, such as the frequent use of 'it' and 'which' with unclear referencing. For instance, 'which was 10 millions' follows a fragment, and 'moreover, it also interconnected' fails to establish a clear logical link between ideas. To achieve a higher level, the writer must use cohesive devices more accurately and structure paragraphs so that ideas follow a logical sequence from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'sectore', 'date of the job' instead of data or figures, and 'skyrocketelly' instead of skyrocket or sky-rocketing. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, like 'constant' and 'dramaticially', but these are marred by spelling and word-form errors. To improve this criterion, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary related to data trends and ensure greater precision in word choice and correct spelling of common descriptive terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses connected by basic conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include tense confusion and awkward passive/active mixes such as 'the number of jobs... has been provide in the line graph', subject-verb agreement issues like 'Agriculture job sectors were decrease', and preposition errors like 'at 20 millions'. Punctuation is also problematic, with random capitalization and misplaced full stops within clauses. To progress, the student must work on basic grammatical accuracy, consistent tense control, and forming complete, grammatically correct sentences.
