Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people employed in four sectors of the US economy, namely manufacturing, retail, agriculture and healthcare, between 1960 and 2020.

Overall, manufacturing was the largest employment sector in the early years, while healthcare and retail experienced considerable growth over the period. In contrast, agriculture showed a consistent decline, becoming the smallest employer by 2020.

In 1960, manufacturing employed approximately 15 million people, compared with around 6 million in both retail and agriculture. Healthcare had the lowest figure, at just 2 million. Manufacturing employment then rose to a peak of 20 million in 1980 before gradually falling to approximately 13 million by 2020.

Meanwhile, retail employment increased steadily from 6 million in 1960 to 10 million in 1980, reaching 15 million in 2000 and approximately 16 million in 2020. Healthcare also experienced significant growth, rising from 2 million to 5 million between 1960 and 1980. This figure then more than doubled to 11 million in 2000 before reaching approximately 16 million at the end of the period.

By comparison, agricultural employment fell from 6 million to 3 million between 1960 and 1980 and remained relatively stable until 2000, before declining further to 2 million in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a fully developed overview and accurate reporting of the key trends across all four sectors. The opening summary accurately captures the broad trajectories, such as manufacturing starting as the dominant sector, the significant growth in healthcare and retail, and the steady decline in agriculture. Data points are carefully selected and accurately cited from the graph, such as manufacturing peaking at 20 million in 1980 and healthcare rising to 16 million by 2020. Comparisons are made effectively throughout, particularly when contrasting the fortunes of agriculture against the rising service and retail sectors. To reach the highest tier, the response could integrate a slightly deeper synthesis of the cross-sector dynamics at the very end of the period, though all core requirements are already handled thoroughly and precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly through the complex dataset from 1960 to 2020. The response makes excellent use of paragraphing, with a clear introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and well-structured body paragraphs that deal with specific groupings of sectors. Cohesive devices are managed skilfully and naturally without ever feeling mechanical, as seen through effective transitional phrases like 'In contrast,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'By comparison.' Referencing is consistently clear, maintaining a tight logical progression throughout the text. To achieve top-band cohesion, transitions could display an even greater variety of sophisticated framing, although the current organizational flow is already exceptionally clear and appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The vocabulary used is wide, fluent, and flexible, demonstrating a strong ability to report statistical trends with appropriate lexical choices. The student employs a good range of less common items and precise reporting verbs and adjectives, such as 'considerable growth,' 'consistent decline,' 'gradually falling,' and 'remained relatively stable.' Word choice and collocations are handled skilfully throughout the essay. Occasional minor slips prevent it from reaching the highest tier; for instance, while terms are natural, introducing slightly more advanced phrasing or specialized economic terminology could elevate the lexical range further. Nevertheless, communication is entirely natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response demonstrates a wide range of structures, utilizing a mixture of simple and complex sentence forms with a high degree of success. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, showcasing a strong command of past tenses, time clauses, and subordinate structures like 'compared with around 6 million in both retail and agriculture' and 'reaching 15 million in 2000 and approximately 16 million in 2020.' Punctuation and grammatical agreements are well controlled throughout. Very occasional minor slips prevent absolute perfection, but grammatical control remains exceptionally strong, allowing the information to be delivered with absolute clarity and precision.
