Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview and reporting the main features of the four economic sectors between 1960 and 2020. The student correctly identifies Manufacturing as the dominant sector initially, and notes the upward trends in retail and healthcare alongside the decline in agriculture. While the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 by providing a well-structured overview and selecting key data points, some features are slightly underdeveloped or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—such as misstating the starting point for retail jobs. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure all specific data points and comparisons are reported with absolute precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical arrangement, moving from an introductory overview into detailed body paragraphs about the sectors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from specific details. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, although referencing is sometimes slightly mechanical or faulty, as seen in phrases like 'In addition to this agriculture jobs decreses over the 6 decade.' The progression between sentences is generally clear, but smoother transitional phrases would enhance the flow and elevate the cohesion to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'contributor', 'stable', and 'proportion'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'retailer' instead of 'retail', 'opertunities', 'decreses', 'aggain', 'expirence', and 'piont'. These errors indicate a limited lexical control that places this criterion firmly at the lower level. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of precise vocabulary relating to data trends and eliminate basic spelling and word-form mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various grammatical forms to describe trends over time. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors related to subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'The graph illustrate', 'proportion four jobs in US', and 'at over the 5 million'. Punctuation errors and run-on structures also occur, such as comma splices in 'Manufacturing jobs were the larger contributer in job market, This was followed by...'. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, reflecting the characteristics of this band level.
