Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to present an overview of the four economic sectors in the US between 1960 and 2020, but it addresses the task only partially. There are several inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating that manufacturing had 20 million jobs in 1960 (when the graph shows 15 million) and misinterpreting the healthcare and retail figures. The overview lacks clarity, and the ideas are limited and under-developed, with some statements becoming confused or contradictory. To move to a higher band, the student must accurately extract and report key data points from the visual input without misinterpreting the trends, while ensuring that the main features are highlighted clearly in a well-defined overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the response, with the writing broken into separate paragraphs that correspond roughly to different time periods or overall summaries. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections, such as the abrupt shifts between sectors in the middle paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used inadequately and repetitively, with excessive reliance on phrases like 'where as' and 'in the graph'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. To improve, the student needs to structure paragraphs more logically around clear thematic or chronological groupings, employing a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The response features several spelling mistakes, such as 'manfacturing', 'masiive', 'agricuture', and 'Millon', alongside inaccurate word forms and choices like 'on it decline' instead of 'in decline'. While there are attempts to use vocabulary related to the prompt, the control over less common lexical items is weak. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, improve precision in word choice and collocations relating to trends and data, and pay much closer attention to accurate spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at more complex or multi-clause sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'This line graph provide' and 'there are 20 Millions job', incorrect article usage, missing prepositions, and poor punctuation. These errors occur throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student needs to develop better control over basic sentence construction, verb forms, plurals, and tense consistency when describing past and present data, whilst reducing the frequency of foundational errors.
