Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task and fails to meet the minimum length requirement, falling short of 150 words (excluding prompt-copied text). While the student attempts to provide an overview and report main features such as the peak of manufacturing in 1980 and the growth of retail and healthcare, the information is limited and contains inaccurate details, such as claiming manufacturing increased to its highest level in the initial year. The overview is weak and lacks a fully developed summary of the key trends across all four sectors. To reach a higher level, the student must ensure the word count requirement is met, provide a clearer and more accurate overview, and support the report with precise and correct data from the chart without misinterpreting initial trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident with basic paragraphing and transition attempts like 'Overall' and 'In the other hand', but the response lacks clear overall progression. Paragraphing is fragmented, and cohesive devices are used inadequately or inaccurately, such as the incorrect prepositional phrase 'In the other hand' instead of 'On the other hand'. Referencing is sometimes confusing, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally broken, making the progression difficult to follow. To improve, the student should use cohesive devices more accurately, ensure smoother transitions between ideas, and structure paragraphs so that each focuses on a coherent group of sectors or trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'dramatically', 'inclined', and 'significant', but these attempts are frequently accompanied by spelling errors ('incresed', 'foolowed', 'enclined') and imprecise word choices or collocations. For instance, using 'inclined' or 'enclined' instead of 'increased' or 'rose' causes some difficulty and confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and use words in appropriate contexts with correct collocations to ensure precise reporting of graphical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, article usage, and prepositions. Examples include missing articles ('about number of jobs', 'in initial year'), incorrect verb forms ('manufacturing has incresed', 'it become the most inclined'), and awkward phrasing. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader in grasping the exact meaning. To progress, the student must develop better control over basic sentence construction, ensure correct subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors.
