Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present an overview and select key data from the line graph. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting and interpreting the visual data. For instance, the student refers to the US economy as including Canada, and misinterprets the subject matter as 'financial system' and 'departments' rather than the four economic sectors clearly shown in the chart. While some main features are mentioned—such as manufacturing starting at 15 million in 1960 and peaking at 20 million in 1980—the overall progression is obscured by factual confusion and under-developed descriptions of trends, such as the vague treatment of the retail and agricultural sectors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the grouping of ideas is somewhat haphazard, combining retail, business, and farming in a single body paragraph without logical transitions. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately, as seen with repetitive phrasing like 'offered jobs in 1960 was' and abrupt shifts between sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly across the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies on basic, repetitive terms and makes noticeable word choice errors, such as describing economic sectors as 'departments', referring to jobs as 'highest jobs offer', and incorrectly mentioning 'Canada'. There are also frequent word-form and collocation inaccuracies, like 'less number of jobs in start'. While the meaning can generally be inferred, these lexical slips cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic descriptive patterns. Attempts at complex or longer sentences are frequently faulty, leading to severe structural awkwardness and missing verbs or prepositions, such as in 'The business and farming sector offered jobs in 1960 was 6 millions'. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'increased upto', 'in 2020 was about', and 'lie in y-axis'. These persistent errors can cause strain and difficulty for the reader.
