Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 6.0)

the graph illustrates about the jobs categories that play part in the economy of the US since 1960 to 2020. The four job categories are manufacturing, retail, agriculture and healthcare. In 1960, manufacturing has a portion of 15 million jobs which rose to 20 million in 1980 but after that a decline has been observed and now in 2020, it is standing at the rate of 12.5 million jobs. The similar declining pattern is also observed in agricultural jobs. Starting from 6 million jobs in 1960, a steady fall has been observed and presently it is at 2.5 million jobs. On the contrary, an uprising pattern is observed in the field of retail and healthcare. Healthcare took a start from 2.5 million in 1960, whereas retail was at 6 million at that time. Both gain improvements with time and now in 2020 they have reached to 15 million jobs. US economy has now the major portion comprised of healthcare and retails jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering all four economic sectors across the given period, highlighting key trends such as the peaks and declines in manufacturing and agriculture, alongside the significant upward trajectory in retail and healthcare. An appropriate overview is provided at the end of the text. However, while the main features are clearly reported, some comparisons lack precision or deeper extension, placing it firmly at this level. The figures cited generally align well with the provided visual data, showing a good ability to select and report relevant information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the body details to the concluding summary. Information is generally well-sequenced, following the temporal changes in the sectors. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or abrupt, particularly in transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and paragraphing is underdeveloped as the entire body of the report is clumped into a single block of text rather than being logically split into distinct paragraphs. Referencing devices are occasionally repetitive, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the main trends effectively. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary and functional reporting phrases such as 'declining pattern', 'steady fall', and 'uprising pattern'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'jobs categories that play part' instead of 'sectors', 'taken a start' instead of 'started', and 'both gain improvements' rather than 'both experienced growth'. These lexical slips and awkward collocations reflect a developing resource that occasionally lacks precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers. There is adequate control over basic verb tenses used to describe past and present data, such as 'rose', 'has been observed', and 'have reached'. However, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, including missing or incorrect articles ('the jobs categories', 'the similar declining pattern') and prepositions ('at the rate of', 'comprised of healthcare and retails jobs'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the information easily.
