Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response falls below the required word count of 150 words, containing only 142 words, with 18 words copied directly from the task prompt. Furthermore, the content fails to accurately summarise the main features of the line graph. The student attempts to describe the data, but the information provided is highly confused, inaccurate, and lacks any clear overview. For instance, the references to percentages rather than millions of jobs, and the statements that manufacturing departments had 5% jobs in 1980, demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the visual data. The response addresses the task only minimally and fails to present a coherent picture of the trends over the 60-year period, resulting in a very low score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting to follow a chronological structure corresponding to the years on the graph. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical sequencing of ideas. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. Referencing between sentences is unclear, as seen in vague phrases like 'the others jobs are not available' and 'this department manufacturing'. While paragraphing is attempted, the lack of effective logical links and the disjointed presentation of ideas severely restrict the coherence of the text, keeping it at a lower band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms related to employment and the economy, such as 'jobs', 'economy', 'sectors', and 'business'. There are frequent errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'department' instead of 'sector', 'oppourtunity' (spelling error), and 'Peoples' instead of 'People'. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'opportunity' and 'perspective', but these are often used inaccurately or inappropriately in context. The limited range of vocabulary and frequent lexical errors impede clear communication and reflect a restricted lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences that are often poorly constructed. There are frequent and systematic errors in basic grammar, including tense usage ('the manufacturing department is active', 'in 1980 the jobs in millions'), article omission ('in 2000 year'), subject-verb agreement ('they all four sectors having jobs'), and sentence fragments ('In 1960 the manufacturing department is active, they have jobs in this department'). Punctuation is also erratic. These frequent errors across basic structures cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
