Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the four sectors across the given time period and successfully provides an overview of the main trends. However, some aspects are unevenly developed or lack precision. For example, stating that healthcare showed a 'steady growth of 14 million by 2020' misinterprets the final value, as the actual growth was from 2 million to 16 million (an increase of 14 million, but reaching a total of 16). Additionally, the description of manufacturing overlooks its fluctuation, briefly noting it peaked in 1980 before dropping, without detailing the 2000 figure. Nevertheless, the main features are successfully selected, meeting the requirements for this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs addressing the visual data, achieving a score that reaches halfway into the band by showing organizational strengths of higher bands. Cohesive devices are used to link information, such as 'Overall, it is crystal clear that', 'on the other hand', and 'Moving to the rest of the information'. However, some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and a few sentences run together without ideal punctuation or conjunction handling. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points, ensuring a logical flow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through terms such as 'decreasing gradually', 'constantly', and 'steady growth'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, the phrase 'least famous' is inappropriate for statistical data describing economic sectors; 'least prominent' or 'smallest' would be correct. Other errors include spelling issues like 'employement' and minor awkwardness in phrasing such as 'in the starting year'. These lexical slips and restricted range of less common vocabulary prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and time-dependent structures. There are several grammatical errors in article usage, agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The line graph represent' (subject-verb agreement), 'jobs in manufacturing sector was highest' (article missing and plural/singular mismatch), and 'by the each passing year'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'that, employement'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and the mix of structures aligns with the expectations for this band level.
