Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response makes an attempt to describe the four sectors, but it does not clearly summarise the graph’s main features and includes unsupported claims about company profits, sales and business difficulties. These are not shown in the chart. Several trends are also misreported: agriculture declined from about 6 million jobs in 1960 to 2 million in 2020, rather than rising from 1960 to 1980; healthcare rose over the period, not just after 2000; and manufacturing fell after its 1980 peak, but the explanation about low sales is invented. The overview is therefore unclear and the key comparisons are not reliably presented. The response is also five words below the required minimum. Focus on the job figures, give a clear overview, and support it with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, including an overview-like opening and separate discussion of sectors. However, the ideas do not progress in a clear sequence: the second paragraph moves between healthcare, agriculture and retail, while the final paragraph repeats claims about profit and manufacturing without clarifying the graph’s trends. Linking expressions such as “overall” and “in contrast” are present, but they do not consistently show the relationship between ideas. Several sentences are difficult to follow because their references are unclear, for example “they can slowly upward.” Group the information into a clear overview followed by comparisons of related trends, and use linking words only where the connection is explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response attempts some task-related vocabulary, including “number of job,” “sector,” “economical growth” and “fluctuated,” but the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unsuitable for describing a graph. Repeated references to “profit,” “low sale” and “difficulties in bus” introduce meanings that the chart does not provide. Spelling and word-form problems, such as “noticabale,” “flaucuated” and “agricultur,” also make parts of the response harder to understand. Aim for precise terms for trends and quantities, such as “employment,” “increased,” “declined” and “remained stable,” and avoid adding business explanations that are not supported by the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response shows an attempt to form longer sentences and use time references, but grammatical control is inconsistent and errors often obscure the intended meaning. Examples include “the number of job … rose over the period of 2000,” where the sentence structure and time expression are unclear, and “The economy of retail in 1960 is grow,” which has an incorrect verb form and tense. Subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “the number of job” and the run-together wording “2020they.” Most sentences rely on simple patterns, and the attempted complex ideas are not reliably controlled. Practise accurate past-tense sentences such as “Retail employment increased from 6 million to 16 million.”
