Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify all four sectors and describe several broad trends, including manufacturing peaking in 1980 and agriculture declining over time. However, the account is only partly accurate and lacks the key comparisons needed for a clear summary. Manufacturing was not low in 1960: it stood at about 15 million jobs, then peaked at 20 million. By 2020 it had fallen, but was not the lowest sector; agriculture was lowest at about 2 million. Retail did not decline in 1960; it rose from about 6 million, and healthcare and retail both reached roughly 16 million by 2020. Include an overview of the main shifts and support it with accurate figures to develop the response more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it introduces the chart and then discusses manufacturing and retail before agriculture and healthcare. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the opening repeats information by saying both that the graph shows jobs in four sectors and then naming those sectors. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “As in,” and “As we have a look” are sometimes awkward or do not clearly connect the comparisons. The paragraphing also does not separate an overview from detailed trends. Grouping the sectors by their patterns—for example, rising sectors versus declining sectors—and using clear comparisons would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “retail,” “agriculture,” and “healthcare,” so the reader can identify the sectors being discussed. However, the range is limited and several repeated or imprecise expressions weaken clarity. “Ratio of the jobs” is not an appropriate way to describe the chart’s figures, which show numbers of jobs, while “demand for jobs” suggests demand rather than employment totals. Phrases such as “extreme rise” and “reached its peak” are also used without precise support. Aim for accurate terms such as “number of jobs,” “employment,” “increased,” and “declined,” and vary these appropriately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “As we can see” and “But by the year 2020,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms occur in phrases such as “the ratio … were” and “the job ratios has reached.” Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “in US do jobs” and “As in the retail profession we can see decline ratios in jobs.” Punctuation and spacing are frequently inaccurate, with missing spaces after commas and a full stop interrupting “were.low.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then combine them using controlled clauses and consistent past-tense forms.
