Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Number of jobs in four sectors of the economy in the US, 1960-2020

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the difference in number of jobs in economy sector of US between 1960 to 2020.

Overall, jobs exists in every sector but some departments like Retail and Healthcare, job had been increasing continously while in Manufacturing and Angriculture there is no continous changes.

In 1960, Manufacturing department had 15 million job and then its been increased to 20 million in 1980 and after that it goes to decreased in 2000. In 2020 it decreased to less then 15 million. Similarly Agriculture sector is decrease as well from where it started in 1960 with more then 5 million job and after that it goes less then 5 million and stays continously lesser.

The other department like Retail and Healthcare, they both are going to higher year after year. Like in 1960, Healthcare sector started with 2 million jobs and getting increased continously and reached to 15 million jobs in 2020 and Reatil sector start with more then 5 million jobs in 1960 and ended up with same 15 million jobs in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast between the rising Retail and Healthcare figures and the declining Agriculture trend, and your overview also notes that Manufacturing does not rise continuously. These are relevant features, and most reported values and directions match the graph. However, some key comparisons are not fully precise: Manufacturing peaks at 20 million in 1980 before falling to 17 million in 2000 and 13 million in 2020, while your account leaves the 2000 figure vague. Healthcare reaches about 16 million, not 15 million, and by 2020 it is level with Retail, rather than simply ending at the same figure you give for Retail. To strengthen the response, report the main turning points and final comparison more explicitly and accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the declining or fluctuating sectors and the rising sectors. This gives the reader a workable progression through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “The other department” help signal relationships, although some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “after that it goes to decreased” makes the sequence difficult to follow, and “where it started” has an unclear reference. The overview also groups the trends broadly without clearly stating the most important endpoint comparison. Use more precise references to years and sectors, and organise each body paragraph around a clear trend with its key figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “sector,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “reached,” so the general meaning is usually understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate. “Jobs exists,” “department,” and “going to higher” are not natural ways to describe employment sectors and trends; “continuously” is also repeated and does not always fit the data. There are spelling errors in “Angriculture,” “continously,” and “Reatil,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for a more varied set of precise trend verbs and standard terms such as “employment,” “sector,” “rose,” “declined,” and “remained stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the reader can generally follow the intended comparisons. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to process. Examples include “jobs exists in every sector,” “Manufacturing department had 15 million job,” and “Agriculture sector is decrease,” where agreement, verb forms, and singular/plural forms are not controlled. The sentence “after that it goes to decreased” also combines incompatible verb forms. Practise forming accurate past-tense descriptions, for example, “Manufacturing employment rose to 20 million in 1980, then fell.” Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural nouns when editing.
