Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies all four sectors and attempts to describe changes over time, but several central trends are substantially misreported, which limits how fully it addresses the graph. Most importantly, agriculture declined from about 6 million jobs to 2 million, rather than improving to 16 million; healthcare rose from about 2 million to 16 million, rather than falling to around 3 million. The overview also incorrectly groups agriculture with retail as strongly improving. Manufacturing and retail are described more accurately, including manufacturing’s 1980 peak. To strengthen the report, first establish the correct overall pattern—healthcare and retail rose, while agriculture fell and manufacturing peaked before declining—then support it with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph describing the sectors, and a concluding statement. It also uses basic sequencing and contrast markers such as “but,” “after that,” and “in 2020,” so the reader can follow the intended timeline. However, the main body combines all four series in one long paragraph, and the conclusion repeats the inaccurate claim that agriculture improved. Some links are unclear, particularly “it is not improved and goes down,” which is intended to describe healthcare but conflicts with the actual trend. Grouping the rising sectors together and the declining sectors together, with clearer references to each one, would create more logical progression and reduce confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to name the sectors and describe basic movement, using phrases such as “peak,” “gradually,” “increases,” and “goes down.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or awkward for describing data, including “the graph highlight the ups and downs,” “its number is almost 16 million,” and “strongly improved.” Spelling errors such as “menufacturing,” “gradualy,” and “Healtcare” are noticeable, while “science” appears to be an incorrect word in the opening. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning harder to interpret, especially when combined with the reversed trends. Use precise verbs such as “rose,” “declined,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “but” and “after that,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in sentence formation and agreement, for example, “There four sectors are” and “The graph highlight”; the opening also runs sentences together without appropriate spacing or punctuation. Verb forms and sentence patterns are often faulty, as in “the number of jobs start with the highest number” and “it goes on its peak.” Missing articles and inconsistent capitalization also appear, such as “in the us” and “the number of job.” These errors can make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate present-tense descriptions and build longer sentences from correctly formed clauses, with clear punctuation.
