Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the four sectors and make a broad attempt to describe their changes, including manufacturing’s later decline and the growth of retail and healthcare. However, the response only partially reports the graph: it gives no figures and misses key comparisons, such as manufacturing being highest in 1980 and retail and healthcare both reaching about 16 million by 2020. Some claims are inaccurate or unclear: manufacturing, retail and healthcare did not all rise in the 1980s, since healthcare was about 5 million, and agriculture fell from 6 million to 3 million between 1960 and 1980. The overview is also vague. The response is 25 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. Include a clear overview and support trends with accurate data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the opening introduces the subject, followed by an overview-like statement and further trend descriptions. You also use basic linking expressions such as “Overall” and “on the other hand.” However, the progression is difficult to follow because the same periods and trends are repeated, and the overview does not clearly separate the main features from supporting details. Punctuation and capitalisation also make boundaries between ideas unclear, as in “facilities. and decreases agriculture sector.” Group the information into a clear introduction, overview and detail paragraphs, and compare related sectors together. Use linking phrases to show contrast or change accurately rather than repeating the same points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “agriculture,” “health care,” “increasing” and “decreasing,” so the reader can recognise the subject and general trends. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. For example, “arise the job facilities,” “grab the market” and “booming the economy” are not natural ways to describe employment figures. There are also spelling and form errors, including “retails,” “manufacture” where the sector is meant, and “retalis.” Use precise chart language such as “the number of jobs rose,” “employment declined,” and “remained stable,” and check sector names and spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example with “on the other hand,” and uses present-tense forms to describe trends. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors are frequent enough to make some statements difficult to interpret. Examples include “the same chart gives the data where manufacture reducing” and “only agriculture were no changes,” where verb forms and agreement are faulty. Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are also inconsistent, as in the lower-case “in 1980s” after a full stop. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences, such as “Manufacturing employment fell after 1980,” and use past tense consistently when reporting the historical data.
