IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that tall apartment complexes are one of major solution of increasing population in the big cities. I strongly agree with the above statemnet because it could save lands including flora and fona while allowing higher population density to live in a unit area. However there are drawbacks such as limitation of intrastructure and increasing the traffic jams.

The construction of tall building apartment requires lesser land area resulting less deforestration. The remaining lands can be developed into mini parks and sanctuaries in the city centre which supports carbondioxide adsorption. The sky rising apartment blocks concentrate higher population density while saving the quality time of people. For example, there are lots of central parks developed in the middle of Bangkok beside the sky rising buildings. People use these parks for exercising and cycling.

In contrast, the infrasture such as schools and hospitals are devided among a dense population, creating an atmosphere which is unable to provide better service. The limitation of roads leads to the traffic jams increasing ones time to go home. It is proved by the higher number of patients per doctor in a urban hosptal and the time taken to reach home after appointment.

In conclusion, tall apartment complexes can be constructed in urban areas as solution for the increasing population. However the infrastructure should be developed inorder to satisfy the icreasing the population density.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly agree that tall apartment blocks can help accommodate urban populations, while acknowledging pressure on infrastructure. The environmental point is relevant, and the Bangkok example gives it some support. However, the response addresses the task only partially because the benefits and drawbacks are not developed in enough detail. For instance, the claim that high-rise buildings save residents’ “quality time” is unclear, and the traffic argument is asserted rather than explained with a specific example. The conclusion repeats your position but does not clarify how far you agree or weigh the benefits against the drawback. The response is also 20 words below the required minimum, limiting the space available to develop your reasoning. Explain each main point more fully and connect examples directly to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion restates your position. The contrast between “In contrast” and the earlier environmental advantages helps signal the shift in argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. In the first body paragraph, the link between higher population density and “saving the quality time of people” is difficult to follow, while the final sentence of the second body paragraph does not clearly explain how the hospital example proves the point about road capacity. Some connections feel mechanical, and the conclusion introduces infrastructure as a condition without developing it. Make the relationship between each claim, explanation, and example explicit, and use clearer referencing where needed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “population density,” “deforestation,” “sanctuaries,” and “infrastructure,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “carbon dioxide adsorption,” although this expression is not natural in this context. A number of spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable, including “statemnet,” “fona,” “intrastructure,” and “hosptal.” Some collocations are also awkward: “one of major solution” and “save lands” do not sound natural. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they reduce precision and sometimes make meaning less clear. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships for urban development and public services.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors occur in sentence structure and grammatical forms. For example, “one of major solution” needs a plural noun and an article, while “The remaining lands … which supports” has a mismatch between the plural subject and verb. In “The construction … requires lesser land area resulting less deforestation,” the relationship between the clauses is not grammatically complete. Article use and prepositions also need attention, as in “in a urban hosptal.” Practise building accurate complex sentences and check agreement, articles, and clause connections; this will make your ideas easier to follow.
