Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people argue that the most useful method to provide enough households in larger cities is to build huge apartment blocks. I completely agree with this opinion because it can provide multiple apartments for multiple families under the roof of a single building.

On the one hand, the building of tall apartments make it efficient to use space allocation by creating multiple rooms or houses on a multistorey huge building providing multiple familes a house under the one roof. Also it will be useful as it will save space for other projects, for example, agriculture, forestation.

On the contrary, there are also some downsides. To illustrate, the ownership of building is shared and everyone has an equal ownership.

In conclusions, tall apartments are usefilul to provide enough homes for families in large cities besides some of the downsides.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear from the opening: “I completely agree,” and you give a relevant reason—that apartment blocks can house many families while using less land. However, the response addresses the task only partially. The supporting point about saving space is brief, and “agriculture, forestation” is not explained in relation to housing needs in large cities. The opposing paragraph introduces shared ownership as a downside but does not explain why it is a problem or how it affects the argument. The conclusion simply repeats your view. The response is also 112 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to develop reasons and relevant examples. Explain each point and support it with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph beginning “On the one hand,” a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. These signposts help readers identify the intended stages of the argument. However, progression between ideas is limited because each paragraph is very short and points are not developed or linked in detail. “On the contrary” signals a contrast, but the shared-ownership point is not clearly connected to the benefits of tall buildings or to your overall position. The phrase “In conclusions” also makes the ending feel formulaic. To improve, organise the body around fully explained reasons, use linking phrases to show how each example supports your view, and make the counterpoint’s relevance explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “apartment blocks,” “space allocation,” “ownership,” and “large cities,” so the reader can follow the general subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “To illustrate.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise: “multiple” appears repeatedly, while “provide enough households” does not express the intended idea of providing homes. Spelling errors such as “familes” and “usefilul” are noticeable, and “forestation” is not the most natural choice in this context. Aim for more precise housing vocabulary and check spelling. For example, distinguish between housing units, residents, and families, and use natural collocations when describing land use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and an example introduced by “for example.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction are evident. In “the building of tall apartments make it efficient,” the singular subject requires “makes,” and the construction “by creating multiple rooms or houses on a multistorey huge building providing…” is difficult to follow because the participle phrase is not clearly attached. Articles and number are also inconsistent in “the ownership of building.” The response relies on a narrow set of sentence patterns, so practise combining a clear main clause with one supporting clause, then check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation.
