Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the population of large cities in increasing rapidly, which has created a shortage of housing. Some people believe that constructing tall apartments buildings is the best solution to this problem. I strongly agree with this statement because it saves land and provide accomodation for a large number of people.

There are several reasons why building apartment blocks is beneficial. Firstly, in big cities very less land are available and which are available that price is very high and all people are not afford it. So, building a tall apartment building which is affordable and also save space and money. For example, many people or family live only for work and so they do not prefer to buy land or buy home. That time apartment building provide accomodation in many numbers of people.

Another important advantage is that tall buidings can help improve urban development. Government can use the remaining land to construct schools, hospitals, parks and shopping centres. Moreover, tall building also have beneficial for multi purpose facilities such as in one tall building provide, shopping, accomodation, healthcare, banking sectors and so on.

However, building too many high-rise apartment can also create certain problems, such as overcrowding, traffic and pressure on basic facilities. Therefore the government should ensure proper plannig, sufficient parking spaces and reliable water and electricity supplies.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that constructing tall apartment blocks is an effective way to solve housing shortages in large cities. Although there are some disadvantages, proper planning and moder facilities can make this solution more successful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support tall apartment blocks, mainly because they use less land and can house many people. You also acknowledge drawbacks, including overcrowding, traffic and pressure on services, and suggest planning measures. These points address the question and are relevant. However, some support is not fully clear or developed. For instance, the example about people who live in cities only for work does not explain how this specifically demonstrates that high-rise housing is the best solution. The claim that one building can provide shopping, healthcare and banking is also listed rather than explained. Develop one or two examples more fully and compare this approach with alternatives to make your argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting high-rise housing, a paragraph recognising disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “However” help readers follow the main stages of your argument. Some connections within sentences are less successful, though. In “and which are available that price is very high,” the relationship between land scarcity and cost is difficult to follow, while “That time” does not clearly link the example to the preceding point. The second supporting paragraph also moves quickly from using remaining land for public facilities to mixed-use buildings. Use clearer sentence links and explain how each example supports the central claim; this would make progression less mechanical and referencing more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “shortage of housing,” “urban development,” “overcrowding,” and “basic facilities.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some topic-specific expressions such as “high-rise” and “reliable water and electricity supplies.” However, word choice and collocation are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as in “apartment buildings,” “provide accomodation in many numbers of people,” and “multi purpose facilities.” Spelling errors such as “buidings,” “plannig,” and “accomodation” also reduce accuracy. Build a more reliable range of housing and city-planning collocations, and check spelling carefully. More precise phrasing would help you express your ideas naturally without relying on repeated forms of “building” and “provide.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, including a concession beginning “Although there are some disadvantages” and a conditional recommendation with “should ensure.” The overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “the population … is increasing” is needed rather than “in increasing”; “it saves land and provide” requires matching verb forms; and “very less land are available” has errors in both the quantifier and agreement. The sentence beginning “So, building a tall apartment building which is affordable” is also incomplete. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and making sure each sentence has a complete main clause. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
