Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that the solution to the housing crisis in the cities is to build high rise apartment blocks. I strongly agree with this statement because it is the best way to make use of the land and provide accommodation to everyone at an affordable rate.

To begin with, the migration of a large proportion of population to the big cities have raised a serious problem. There is not enough land which can be used for the housing purposes. The houses which are meant for a limited number of members have to be used by a greater number via sharing which can cause overcrowding. The space alloted by the government for the housing societies is limited. The best way to tackle this is to make use of the space and build tall buildings consisting of multiple floors. In this way, a large number of people can be accomadated in that limited area of land. For instance, Karachi is a densely populated city and the problem of the housing crisis of a large population is managed by steep apartment buildings.

Another reason is the rising cost of the houses. The cost for even a small area of land is quite expensive. Inflation is rising day by day. Not everybody can afford to buy or rent separate house for themselves. Houses in apartment buildings are quite affordable in compared with separate houses. It gives common man a opportunity to have a home on his own instead of shared spaces in houses. For example, in overpopulated big cities like dubai where there is serious housing crisis, studio apartments are very popular because it provides accomadation at a reasonable rate. The buildings in the present age have become quite modern and it provides a great environment for everyone to live under one roof with harmony.

In conclusion, due to current situation of a sharp increase in the urban population, the best way to manage the housing crisis is to build tall apartment blocks where there is enough space for everyone. Governments should take initiatives to provide accomadation to everyone at a reasonable rate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that tall apartment blocks are the best response to urban housing shortages. Both main reasons—using limited land efficiently and making housing more affordable—are relevant, and the Karachi and Dubai examples help illustrate them. This fully covers the central question and shows some development beyond simply stating your opinion. However, the affordability argument is asserted more than explained: clarify why apartment construction lowers costs, and distinguish affordability from the separate issue of limited land. The examples are also brief and general. To strengthen the response further, develop each reason with a specific explanation or consequence and acknowledge a relevant limitation, such as the need for good design and infrastructure in high-rise developments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “housing crisis,” “cities,” and “apartment buildings.” Some links between claims need to be clearer: the move from rising land costs to apartment affordability would benefit from an explanation of how building vertically affects prices. Several sentences also run together because punctuation and spacing are missing, which weakens the flow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary linking and referencing so the organisation feels more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “migration,” “overcrowding,” “limited area of land,” “Inflation,” and “urban population.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more formal language suit the task. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however. For example, “housing purposes” and “housing societies” are not the most natural expressions in context, while “accomadated” and “accomadation” are misspelled. “Steep apartment buildings” is also an unsuitable description. Improve precision by checking collocations and spelling, and avoid repeating “reasonable rate” and “housing crisis” when more specific alternatives are available. This would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses (“The houses which are meant for a limited number of members…”) and a conditional-style explanation of the problem. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the migration … have raised” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “a opportunity” needs the correct article. In “Not everybody can afford to buy or rent separate house,” the singular count noun needs an article or plural form. Punctuation also needs attention: several sentences are joined without spaces or full stops, as in “problem. There” and “land.The.” Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
