Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that building tall apartments could solve the housing crisis that is happening. I partly agree with this perspective because a smaller area of land could be used to build a tall apartments blocks which could provide homes to many people compared to a single house for one family. However, constructing tall apartments can take a long time.

Building tall apartment blocks can help resolve the housing crisis people are facing, because smaller land can accommodate more people. As the population is increasing in a big cities, because of the job availablities and students university the need for houses is increasing. For example, Melbourne has a lot of immigrants people some for work while others for studies, and to find a house is quite difficult. So if there was more apartments built the problem could have been avoided.

However, constructing tall building blocks takes a long time and that can not be a solution for the next couple years. Also, building tall apartments is quite expensive because of the extra cost compared a house which could influence the rental price. For instant, if somene is building 12 plus floors apartments it would take them a couple years to complete to finish the apartment which means extra money on construction workers and equipments. And those costs would reflect on rents.

In conclusion, constructing tall apartment blocks could be a solution to the housing crisis people are facing, but it would take long time to build and it is not the immediate solution for now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly agree that tall apartment blocks can help, while arguing that they are not an immediate solution. You address both the benefit of accommodating more people on limited land and the drawbacks of construction time and cost. The Melbourne example makes the housing pressure more concrete. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the claim that more apartments would have avoided the problem is not supported with detail, and the cost argument could explain more clearly how construction expenses affect affordability or supply. Develop these links and consider whether other housing approaches complement high-rise building to make your response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present advantages and disadvantages, and the conclusion restates your view. The progression from land efficiency to construction delays and costs is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “However” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. To improve further, make the links between examples and claims more explicit; for instance, explain how Melbourne’s demand demonstrates the value of building upward. Some connections are repetitive or awkward, particularly the repeated reference to the housing crisis and the “because” construction in the second paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “housing crisis,” “accommodate,” “population,” “rental price,” and “construction workers.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas, but the range and precision are uneven, and several noticeable word-choice, spelling, or collocation errors reduce naturalness. Examples include “job availablities,” “immigrants people,” “for instant,” and “extra cost compared a house.” Repeated use of “tall apartments” and “problem” also limits flexibility. Aim to learn common housing-related collocations and check spelling and word forms; more precise phrasing would make your argument clearer without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if there was more apartments built” and a relative clause in “a house which could influence the rental price.” The main meaning is generally understandable, and the response has a clear sentence-level structure. However, some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction remain. For example, “a big cities” has a number mismatch, “a tall apartments blocks” combines incompatible singular and plural forms, and “if there was more apartments built” needs a plural construction. The sentence beginning “As the population is increasing … because” is also awkwardly formed. Practise checking each sentence for a clear main clause, subject–verb agreement, and correct article use.
