Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly believed that a better approach to provide more accommodation in large cities is to build tall buildings so that more people can live there. I partially agree with this statement because it has its own pros and cons which one cannot deny.

One solution to lack of residence is to construct taller apartments because more people can live there if the basic necessities are available. Moreover this has another advantage that by following this approach people can choose the apartments according to their requirements (the number of rooms they need or the rent they can afford). Some people does not like to live on the ground floor and some doesn't want to be on the top, everyone has their own preference, choosing according to their interests could be made easy if we have taller apartments and it will be easy to adjust people with different interests in a single apartment.

Although it has a number of advantages but still you can not neglect the fact that there are some drawbacks if the apartments are not perfectly planned before construction. For example one major issue could be of car parking, if more people are living in a building then there should be reserved parking for each home. Water supply on the other hand can be a problem too if the water is limited in that building and the needs are not fulfilled. Maintaining clean environment throughout the building could be a challenge because of multiple families living there and it'll be difficult to have a proper check and balance.

In conclusion, higher buildings can be help more helpful if they are properly planned, maintained and satisfy all the requirements that are essential to live there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree that tall apartment blocks can help provide housing, while recognising practical drawbacks. You address both sides with relevant points, including residents’ choice of apartment size or floor, parking, water supply and building cleanliness. This covers the task, but some ideas are more fully explained than others. The discussion of residents’ preferences is lengthy, yet its connection to providing enough homes is not made explicit; the drawbacks are listed but not developed with examples or explanation of how they might be addressed. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why high-rise construction is an effective solution and support each main point with a specific example or consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting high-rise housing, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two main body paragraphs is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Although,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences contain several ideas joined together, particularly the discussion of residents’ floor preferences. The conclusion also repeats the need for planning without clearly restating the extent of your agreement. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make the relationship between each example and your main argument more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “accommodation,” “reserved parking,” “water supply,” and “maintained.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “basic necessities” and “check and balance.” However, word choice and collocation are noticeably uneven, which limits precision. For example, “lack of residence” is not a natural way to describe a housing shortage, and “adjust people with different interests” does not clearly express the intended idea. “Clean environment throughout the building” is also vague. Aim for more natural housing-related collocations and avoid repeating general words such as “people,” “building,” and “requirements.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if the basic necessities are available” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Some people does not like” should use a plural verb, and “some doesn't want” needs a plural subject and matching verb. The sentence beginning “Although it has a number of advantages but still…” combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. The final sentence, “higher buildings can be help more helpful,” also has an incorrect verb construction. Review subject–verb agreement and practise building complex sentences with one clear grammatical pattern at a time.
