To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often proposed that tall appartments should be build to provide enough homes in bigger cities. I strongly disagree with this view becuase tall apartments are more prone to earthquakes and for elderly people, it becomes difficult to go upstairs.

The main reason is that apartments that are tall are more prone to earthquakes. This is because according to the laws of physics, it is very difficult to build a taller building which can handle the earthquakes and other shock waves although it is not impossible. especially in underdeveloped countries due to corruption and some other factors. The focus isn't on the materials used in the building which lead to horrible results. For example, in 2005 earthquake many people living in the taller buildings, lost their lives. Reason was that buildings were taller and in their consturction cheap and unappropriate materials were used. Therefore, it is better to avoid taller buildings until we have strong regulations and enforcment on those as well.

Another important reason is that with taller buildings, it become difficult to go upstairs or downstair especially for the elderly. This is because many times in the building the elevators are not working in that case. It becomes very difficult for elderly people to go upstairs. For example, in taller apartments many times there is some old person who wants to go at the top floor but elevator doens't work. As a result, it becomes a nightmare for the older people so hence it is better to avoid these tall buildings.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree with building tall apparments. This is mainly because of the earthquacks which can lead to thousand of life losses as well as the difficultly that elderly people face while going upstairs or downstairs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you disagree with relying on tall apartment blocks, and you give two relevant reasons—earthquake risk and access difficulties for older residents. The earthquake paragraph includes an example and explains how weak construction standards could increase danger. However, the response only partly develops the task: it does not compare tall blocks with other ways of providing homes, and the claim that tall buildings are inherently more vulnerable is broad and needs more precise support. The elevator example repeats the same difficulty rather than extending the argument. To strengthen the response, explain why these concerns outweigh the housing benefits and develop a more specific example or alternative approach.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “The main reason,” “Another important reason,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective paragraphing. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or unclear: “This is because” is repeated, and “Therefore” and “As a result” sometimes introduce conclusions without adding a new step in the reasoning. The phrase “so hence” is redundant, while the long earthquake paragraph would benefit from clearer links between construction standards, the example, and your recommendation. Use a wider range of precise references and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “earthquakes,” “shock waves,” “regulations,” and “enforcement.” Some choices show an attempt to be specific, such as “cheap and inappropriate materials” and “a nightmare for older people.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy: “appartments,” “becuase,” “consturction,” “doens't,” and “earthquacks.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, including “go at the top floor” and “strong regulations … on those.” Aim to learn accurate collocations for construction safety and accessibility, and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish structural risk from the problems caused by poor building standards.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, for example, “This is because … it is very difficult to build a taller building which can handle the earthquakes,” and you use subordinate clauses to explain causes and examples. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but control is uneven, and some sentence structures are faulty. Examples include “tall appartments should be build” and “it become difficult,” where the verb forms do not agree with the subject or required construction. In “in 2005 earthquake,” the article is missing, and the sentence beginning “Reason was that…” is incomplete in form. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need attention, particularly the lower-case “especially” after a full stop and the long, loosely connected sentence in the first body paragraph. Practise accurate verb forms and complete sentence patterns.
