IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Some people think that constructing high level of apartment blocks is a best approach to offer enough accomodations in big cities. I strongly agree with this statement because more people will move to the big cities for better life and in the large cities there are not enough space to build more building.

In the near future, people have to go large cities like capital city for their career and other purpose of their life. In big cities, population is growing day by day and there are not enough space to build more building for people. people have to build their building taller rather than build another building in another space. For example, in bangladesh, government have tobuild many building for populace in the capital city dhaka. The state are couldn't find anothe

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear position—“I strongly agree”—and give relevant reasons: population growth in large cities and limited space for new construction. The Dhaka example also begins to connect your argument to a real context. However, the response addresses the task only partially: the reasons are asserted rather than explained, and the example is unfinished (“The state are couldn't find anothe…”). There is no developed discussion of why tall apartment blocks are the best approach or any consideration of alternatives. The response is also 117 words below the required minimum, which leaves too little space to develop and support your ideas. Extend each reason with explanation and a complete, specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening paragraph gives your view, followed by a paragraph about population growth and space. The ideas are generally related to the question, and “For example” signals an illustration. However, the overall progression is limited because the second paragraph repeats the point that cities lack space without moving the argument forward. The response ends abruptly, so the example and paragraph are incomplete. Linking is also sparse, and the repeated use of “big cities” and “building” makes connections feel repetitive rather than developed. Use separate paragraphs for distinct reasons, then connect each reason to an explanation and a complete example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the central topic, with relevant terms such as “apartment blocks,” “population,” “career,” and “capital city.” However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural. For example, “high level of apartment blocks” is not an idiomatic way to describe tall buildings, while “accomodations” is misspelled and “populace” is an awkward choice in this context. Repetition of “big cities,” “build,” and “building” also restricts precision. Aim to use accurate collocations and vary key terms, such as “urban population,” “housing,” and “high-rise apartments.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons, as in “I strongly agree with this statement because…” This shows some ability to connect clauses, but the range remains limited and errors are frequent enough to affect clarity. Examples include “there are not enough space,” where the noun and verb do not agree, and “people have to build their building taller,” which has an unclear subject and structure. The phrase “The state are couldn't find” combines incompatible verb forms, and the final sentence is incomplete. Capitalisation at sentence beginnings and for “Bangladesh” and “Dhaka” also needs attention. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence patterns before adding more complex clauses.
