Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that the best way to accomodate more people is to stretch cities vertically, rather than horizentally. In simpler words, building tall apartment blocks as compared to building seperate homes. I will present both negative and positive agreement in my essay.

Population in large cities have increased significantly as people come to these cities for better employment opportunities and a good lifestyle. As a result, people are finding it hard to build homes due to the less availability of land and also finding it hard to rent homes and appartments due to the population of the city. One of the biggest advantages of building tall apartments is that we can never run out of space. One one hand. Tall buildings can offer more homes to people in a significantly less space. On the other hand, tall buildings many not only have appartments but they can also offer other resources such as a supermarket, resturants, cinema and other entertainment facilities at the same building. Which would facitilate people alot as it would reduce their effort and time both.

In contrast, tall buildings have some disadvantages such as the contruction of huge building is very costly and timetalking. It can take several years to make a building functional. Not only the construction is time talking, these buildings are required to be built with extra planning and precautions. Building should have a strong and rigid structure to withstand long years. In case of any emergency or a natural disaster, it should have a emergency exit as evacuating tall buildings during fires or earthquakes is very difficult.

In conclusion, tall buildings over houses have both advantages and disadvantages. Tall buildings can provide more appartments in less space and also easy to access facilities as well, however construction of such building is costly and a time taking process, which needs proper planning. I agree with the view of building tall appartment blocks as the advantages it offers out weighs the cons.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is ultimately clear: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best response, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both the benefits and drawbacks, with relevant points about using limited land efficiently, providing nearby facilities, construction costs, and emergency evacuation. This covers the task well, while the balanced discussion also shows some awareness of the opposing considerations. However, the support is uneven: the claim that cities “can never run out of space” is too absolute, and the facilities point is listed rather than explained in relation to housing provision. The safety concern is relevant but would be stronger with a specific example or explanation. Develop these points and make the comparison with alternatives more explicit to strengthen the argument further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, a contrasting paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from urban population pressure to the benefits of vertical housing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “In contrast” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. However, some linking is mechanical or inaccurate. “One one hand” is followed by “On the other hand” even though the points are both advantages, and the sentence beginning “Which would facilitate…” is an incomplete continuation. The introduction’s promise to present “both negative and positive agreement” is also unclear. Use transitions that show the actual relationship between ideas, and connect or restructure sentence fragments to make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “employment opportunities,” “availability of land,” “natural disaster,” and “evacuating tall buildings.” These choices make the subject clear, and terms such as “rigid structure” show an attempt to use more specific language. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions are noticeable, including “accomodate,” “horizentally,” “time talking,” and “out weighs.” Some word choices also weaken precision: “we can never run out of space” overstates the point, while “easy to access facilities” is awkwardly phrased. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and choose measured wording such as “make more efficient use of limited land” rather than absolute claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a reason clause (“as people come to these cities…”) and a conditional construction (“In case of any emergency…”). The main ideas remain understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “Population in large cities have increased” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “Which would facilitate people…” is a sentence fragment. “One one hand.” is incorrectly punctuated, while “a emergency exit” needs the correct article. There are also awkward constructions such as “the construction of huge building is very costly.” Review agreement and article use, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve the range and accuracy.
