Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 171 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack the necessary depth and supporting evidence required for an academic essay. While the student attempts to address the prompt by discussing the benefits and drawbacks of tall buildings, the ideas are under-developed. For instance, the mention of environmental impact and business motives is too brief to constitute a well-supported argument. To improve, the student must expand on their points with specific examples and ensure the essay meets the length requirement to allow for full task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and repetitive way, such as the frequent use of 'building tall buildings' and simple transitions like 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is present but the paragraphs are underdeveloped, which disrupts the logical flow. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details that flow naturally into the next point.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which restricts the ability to convey complex ideas. Phrases like 'a-lot of people', 'creating a lot of money', and 'very unique way' are basic and lack the precision expected at higher bands. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'creating a lot of money' instead of 'generating significant profit'. The spelling of 'weather' (instead of 'whether') and the misuse of 'Businessman's' (plural vs possessive) indicate a need for more attention to detail. To improve, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('population has increased', 'it is also has become'), incorrect pluralization ('many peoples'), and punctuation errors. The use of complex sentences is minimal and often contains errors, such as the run-on sentence in the introduction. To improve, the student needs to practice using a wider range of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses and conditional sentences, while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct article usage. Proofreading for basic errors is also essential.
