Student answer (Band 6.5)

High rise buildings are the best way to provide enough homes in metropolitan cities. I agree with the statement as it provides accommodation to more people and also reduce government expenditure.

Rapid urbanization has led the workers migrate to the cities in search of job opportunities. In order to, accommodate the large number of people in the cities have lead to building tall apartment blocks.

This helps to provide housing to more families in the compact area rather than building individual house for each family. High rise building have a several house blocks, which can accommodate more families in the single building. This saves a lot of city space for better infrastructure projects. For instance, In Indian cities, government encourages tall apartment blocks to provide more housing to people in the city. This helps the government to use other spaces to build infrastructure projects such as metro lines and other projects.

Furthermore, High rise building often reduce government expenditure on the basic services. Government spend a significant amount of money in providing facilities such as street lights, sanitation and others. As the more people stay in one residential complex they can have a few street lights rather than providing street lights to every two or three houses. Moreover, instead of collecting household waste from each individual house on the street, they can collect waste directly from all households from tall apartment blocks, which saves fuel and time for sanitation workers. As a result, governments prefer high rise building due to reduce in government expenditure.

In conclusion, I think that tall building block have significant impact on the cities by providing more houses to the people and reducing government expenditure on the basic services.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of high-rise buildings. The ideas are relevant, focusing on space efficiency and government expenditure. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the point about infrastructure is clear, the argument regarding government expenditure is slightly repetitive and could have been expanded with more nuanced examples or counter-arguments to reach a higher band. The response is well-structured and maintains a consistent position throughout, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'As a result' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, which helps the reader follow the writer's line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'metropolitan cities', 'rapid urbanization', and 'residential complex'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reduce in government expenditure' instead of 'reduction in government expenditure'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'High rise building have a several house blocks') and article usage (e.g., 'in the compact area'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'In order to, accommodate the large number of people in the cities have lead to building tall apartment blocks.' These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
