Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this contemporary world, residential places are significantly increasing because of the more population. Construction of tall apartments in metropolitan areas are considered to be most prominent method to have sufficient living places. I completely agree with this notion as this provides budget friendly options and proper use of space.

The most dominant advantage of constructing tall buildings in city centres is cost effective selection. Majority of substantial industries are available in urban areas, due to this mostly people have employment there. Therefore, if tall building are manufactured by governments, workers may live near to their workplace, devote less money on travelling and save more time. They can conveniently reach their destination without spending extra time. So, tall buildings are best way to provide living place.

Furthermore, manufacturing of tall building in large cities leads to appropriate utilisation of space. Cities always lack space to build new houses for living because of more restaurants, corporate offices or cafes. Thus, making more tall building results into conservation of space for other purposes like indoor playgrounds or meeting halls, while also providing suitable accommodation to residents. As a result, building apartment with more height takes less space and becomes the good way to have residence.

Nevertheless, the risk of constructing tall apartment blocks in cities is also considerable in unforeseen circumstances like earthquake or tsunami. These building are always at high threat of falling in their conditions, which may cause more destruction. However, this problem can be tackled by making the base more stronger and deeper for long term benefits.

In conclusion, although tall buildings have drawback especially during earthquake and tsunami, I am completely in favour of the statement that these are the best way to give enough housing in metropolitan areas, both financially and economically.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding cost-effectiveness and space utilization are relevant and logically developed. While the ideas are sound, they could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The counter-argument regarding safety is acknowledged and addressed, which adds balance to the essay. Overall, the response is well-focused on the topic and provides a consistent argument from introduction to conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as cost-effectiveness or space management. Cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Thus', and 'Nevertheless' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'metropolitan areas', 'utilisation of space', and 'accommodation'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'manufactured by governments' (instead of 'constructed' or 'developed') and 'more population' (instead of 'a larger population'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Construction of tall apartments... are', 'tall building are manufactured') and article usage ('the good way', 'the most prominent method'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pluralization.
